After the successful debut of the two-seat Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter fighter, RNAS ordered the Sopwith 9700 single-seat bomber among six new types for its own needs. The first single-seat 1 1/2 Strutter was delivered to the RNAS in June 1916, but official acceptance took place in August. The fuselage of the Type 9700 was modified to provide internal stowage for the bomb load. For easy access to the bomb racks additional doors were installed in the fuselage sides; four bomb doors were installed under the fuselage, opening just before dropping the bomb. The pilot also had a single Vickers synchronized gun. Nicknamed Sopwith Bombers, they were intensively used until the more modern DH4 appeared. After withdrawal from the front line, single-seaters were dispersed between various training units; some converted to the Ship Strutter standard and were based on aircraft carriers. In spite of criticism, the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter was a conceptual forerunner of many successful designs and deserved fame as one of the classic aircraft of World War One. Highly recommended!

- A new naval hisorical publication has arrived! Torpedo Boats of The Russian Fleet book just have been printed and is available for online ordering (price $9.95). The 1877-78 Russian-Turkish war showed what a terrible weapon a torpedo was. This war also exposed deficiencies of torpedo carriers. Their lack of seagoing abilities and slow speed sometimes made mine attacks impossible. To provide such attacks bigger ships of special construction, such as torpedo boats, were needed. An impulse of their intensive construction in Russia were strained diplomatic relations with Great Britain as well as the absence of a modern armored fleet in Russia. To defend sea approaches to St.Petersburg almost every domestic dockyard began building a number of relatively inexpensive torpedo boats. The work continued day and night at full speed and by January 1, 1878 the Russian Navy had had as much as 111 ships of this class. 52 pages, 60 photos, 23 schemes. Recommended!

- For WW2 Armour Fans! A new interesting high illustrated publications Tiger German WW2 Tanks at the Eastern Front. Part 1 book and Tiger German WW2 Tanks at the Eastern Front. Part 2 book are available for online ordering (price $11.95 for each). Tiger I tank played a very important part in the battles of the Second World War. The appearance of these tanks on the battlefields allowed delaying the collapse of the Nazi regime in Germany. At the moment of its first appearance, Tiger tank was superior to any tank of the Allies. The achievements of the 502nd, 503rd and 505th heavy tank battalions' crews are more than just impressive. With the advent of the new Soviet tanks and anti tank artillery pieces on the Eastern Front in the middle of 1943 - beginning of 1944, the Tigers superiority gradually disappeared. But still, the Tigers crews often gained the upper hand even in the battles with such a formidable foe as IS-2 tank. Overall, approximately 1000 Tiger tanks took part in the battles on the Eastern Front, and they destroyed around 8000 Soviet tanks. This ration of kills over losses (1:8) was not equaled by any other tank of the Second World War. Both books contain a lot of photos and illustrations. Recommended!

- RODEN company presents today: 1/72 Fokker D.VII Alb (early) German WWI fighter model kit (price $8.95) is available for online ordering. In spring 1918 the German fighter aircraft inventory was totally obsolete and needed much newer planes. Fokker factories had limited capacities and was at the same time also busy developing a new prototype V18 with better performances compared to D.VII (this plane would later become well-known as Fokker E.V/D.VIII, or, colloquially, Flying Razor). Idflieg solved this problem simply: soon Albatros Flugzeugwerke that stopped at this moment production of an obsolete Albatros D.VI type, received an order on a license production of D.VII at its factories. Apart from main factory based in Johanisthal, Albatros had an OAW (Ostdeutschen Albatros Werken) branch factory in Schneidemuhl, and these two plants could build many more aircraft than Fokker plants. Albatros-built D.VII was absolutely similar to early-built ones by Fokker, and only presence of Alb (to Albatros) letters added to the the serial distinguished these airframes. About 2,600 aircraft were built under license (together with OAW plant), more than half of the entire Fokker D.VII production. Allies captured many D.VIIs just after the end of VWI; all other aircraft were scrapped subject to the Armistice conditions. The kit is of a good quality. Highly recommended!

First military infantry colleges were opened in 1863 like Konstantinovskoye and Pavlovskoye Colleges in St.Petersburg and Alexandrovskoye in Moscow. The college students were called cadets. The book mainly dwells on the system of education of future officers of the Russian Imperial Army, their uniforms, military insignia and organization of training. Unique photos and color pictures suplement the text to illustrate the uniform of the Russian cadets. 62 pages, 28 photos, 8 illustrations.

- RODEN company presents: 1/72 Albatros D.ll Oeffag s.53 German WWI fighter model kit (price $8.95) is available for online ordering. After the successful debut of the German Albatros D.l and D.ll in late 1916, Austro-Hungary obtained the license rights for D.II production. Because each Austrian aircraft manufacturer had its own identification figure (Oeffag had number 5) and each aircraft type had an individual key, Albatros D.II (Oeffag) received the serial number 53. Oeffag designers improved the German design: wing and airframe structure was strengthened and a more powerful (185hp) Austro-Daimler engine was installed which gave additional maneuverability to the Oeffag design (it was slightly heavier than the German Mercedes D.Illa, and top speed was unchanged). The most noticeable feature was a complete enclosure of the engine cylinders by detachable panels, although these were often removed in warmer weather conditions to prevent overheating. In total, 16 aircraft of the D.ll (Oeffag) type were built, with the serial numbers 53.01-53.16. Together with the more modern D.III (Oeffag), these planes were intensively used until the last days of World War One. The kit of a good quality. Recommended!

- Another traditionally interesting offer from RODEN company for WWI Aviation Fans! 1/72 Albatros D.IlI German WWI fighter model kit (price $8.95) is available for online order. The appearance of the Albatros D.III was closely influenced by then recent French designs, in particular Nieuport. Of course Nieuport fighters were not true biplanes but "sesquiplanes" (i.e. 1.5-wingers). The lower wing was built around a single spar, and the chord of the lower wing was narrower in comparison with the upper wing. The Albatros designers completely rebuilt the wing cellule; all other elements of the Albatros D.II (fuselage, tail unit, undercarriage) were retained. Interplane struts received a new configuration: parallel struts were replaced by V-struts. The first mass production aircraft reached the frontline in December 1916 and were accepted with enthusiasm of many pilots. Production of the Albatros D.III increased from month to month: in March 1917, 137 were in frontline service, with 327 in May, and 446 in November of the same year. The first half of 1917 was the star time for the Albatros D.III. The introduction of the British S.E.5 and French Spad S.VII immediately made it obsolete. But at the end of 1918, when the Fokker D.VII dominated in the sky, many Albatros D.llls were still defending the air space of Germany. A kit of a good quality. Recommended!
